ก่อน พ.ศ. 2517 รายวิชาภูมิศาสตร์เปิดสอนในภาควิชาสังคมศาสตร์และมนุษยศาสตร์ คณะวิทยาศาสตร์และอักษรศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ภายหลังการก่อตั้งคณะสังคมศาสตร์ใน พ.ศ. 2517 มีการจัดตั้ง "ภาควิชาภูมิศาสตร์และประวัติศาสตร์"

วันที่ 26 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2518 โดยมีการบริหารภาควิชาร่วมกับสาขาวิชาประวัติศาสตร์ และเปิดสอนในระดับปริญญาตรี 2 หลักสูตร คือ หลักสูตรศิลปศาสตรบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาภูมิศาสตร์ และหลักสูตรศิลปศาสตรบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาประวัติศาสตร์ ภาควิชาภูมิศาสตร์และประวัติศาสตร์บริหารงานร่วมกัน
วันที่ 20 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2528 สาขาวิชาภูมิศาสตร์จึงได้แยกการบริหารจากสาขาวิชาประวัติศาสตร์ ก่อตั้งเป็นภาควิชาภูมิศาสตร์

พ.ศ. 2538 ภาควิชาฯ ได้เปิดสอนระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาหลักสูตรแรก คือ หลักสูตรวิทยาศาสตรมหาบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาภูมิศาสตร์การวางแผนการตั้งถิ่นฐานมนุษย์
พ.ศ. 2552 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อหลักสูตรเป็นหลักสูตรวิทยาศาสตรมหาบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาภูมิศาสตร์การวางแผนพัฒนา
พ.ศ. 2542 มีการปรับปรุงหลักสูตร เปลี่ยนแปลงโครงสร้างหลักสูตรให้มีความเหมาะสมยิ่งขึ้น พร้อมทั้งเปลี่ยนชื่อหลักสูตรจาก หลักสูตร ศิลปศาสตรบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาภูมิศาสตร์ เป็นหลักสูตรวิทยาศาสตรบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาภูมิศาสตร์
พ.ศ. 2553 ได้เปิดการเรียนการสอนโครงการหลักสูตรวิทยาศาสตรบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาภูมิศาสตร์ ภาคพิเศษนับถึงปีการศึกษา 2557

Prior than 1974, Geography was located in the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Science and Arts at Kasetsart University. Later, the Faculty of Geography and History was established in 1974.
- 1975, November 26 - The 2 programs from Department of History and Department of Geography were developed and jointly administration. Offered two bachelor's degree programs, namely Bachelor of Arts (Geography) and Bachelor of Arts (History).
- 1985, May 20 - The Department of Geography was seperated and established as individual named as Department of Geography since then.
- 1995 - Master of Science in Human Settlement Planning Geography was initiated
- 2009 - Master of Science in Human Settlement Planning Geography was changed namely Master of Science in Development and Planning Geography
- 1999 - Curriculum improvement, structure redesign to suit the needs and job requirement at that time period. The degree was changed from Bachelor of Arts (Geography) to Bachelor of Science (Geography)
- 2010 - The special program has been started under the Geography Deparment
